Named in honor of Horace Boatwright, whose life was defined by service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to community and youth. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force and a 33-year member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Horace rose through the ranks to become the Department’s first African American Undersheriff in 2021. While his accomplishments were many, he was most admired for his humility, integrity, and dedication to mentoring others. He believed deeply in education, lifelong growth, and creating opportunities for those who might not have access to them.
Throughout his career, Horace championed programs that strengthened both the Department and the community. He mentored deputies, supported employee wellness initiatives, and devoted his time to outreach efforts that empowered young people—teaching, coaching, and guiding at-risk youth toward brighter futures. Whether in uniform, in the classroom, or serving through his church and community organizations, Horace led with compassion and quiet strength. This scholarship reflects his enduring belief that investing in education and supporting the next generation is one of the greatest ways to serve. His legacy lives on in every student inspired to lead, persevere, and give back to their community.
